Johan Sverdrup oilfield development, Norway
Name and Location
Johan Sverdrup oilfield development, Norway.
Client
The project is a joint venture between Statoil (40.0267%), Lundin Norway (22.12%), Petoro (17.84%), Det norske oljeselskap (11.8933%) and Maersk Oil (8.12%).
Project Description
Johan Sverdrup is one of the five biggest oilfields on the Norwegian continental shelf.
With expected resources of between 1.7-billion barrels and three-billion barrels of oil equivalent, it will also be one of the most important industrial projects in Norway over the next 50 years.
The field will be developed in phases. The first phase comprises four installations – a utility and living quarters platform, a platform for processing and drilling respectively, and a riser platform, as well as three subsea water injection templates. The platforms will be interlinked by gangways.
Daily production in the first phase has been estimated at between 315 000 bbl/d to 380 000 bbl/d.
At peak production, the operation is expected to reach 550 000 bbl/d to 650 000 bbl/d.
Oil from the field will be piped to the Mongstad terminal, in Hordaland. The gas will be transported by Statpipe to the Kårstø processing plant, in North Rogaland.
Value
The first-phase of the project is estimated at NKr117-billion.
Duration
Production start-up is scheduled for end 2019.
Latest Developments
Statoil has, on behalf of the Johan Sverdrup partnership, signed a contract with a joint venture consisting of Kvaerner and KBR for construction of the topside for the utility and living quarters platform. The contract award is subject to approval of the plan for development and operation of the Johan Sverdrup field by the Norwegian Parliament (Storting) in 2015. The contract is valued at NKr6.7-billion.
The contract includes engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the topside for the Johan Sverdrup utility and living quarters platform.
The utility and living quarters platform consists of one utility module and one accommodation module. Subcontractors in Poland will manufacture the utility module under management of Kvaerner; the module will be completed at Stord, in Norway.
KBR will engineer and acquire equipment for the utility module. The accommodation module will be built at Apply Leirvik’s yard in Stord, Norway, and in Emtunga, Sweden.
The topside modules will be assembled at Kvaerner Stord.
The topside will weigh an estimated 19 000 t, the utility module 9 700 t and the accommodation module 9 300 t.
In addition to accommodation, all field production control and monitoring activities will be carried out in the control room on the utility and living quarters platform.
The platform will also contain central support systems for the field centre such as emergency power, firewater systems, diesel, heat recovery and freshwater production.
The contract also includes an option for commissioning assistance and offshore hook-up for the platform.
The utility and living quarters platform will be connected to the processing platform at the Johan Sverdrup field centre by a gangway.
The utility and living quarters platform will be completed in the first quarter of 2019 for installation at the Johan Sverdrup field for use by the world’s largest heavy-lift vessel Pioneering Spirit.
